The Seychelles are unusual among ocean islands: the inner group are granite, fragments of an ancient continent rather than volcanic cones, giving them dramatic boulder-strewn beaches and forests holding endemic species such as the coco de mer palm, whose seed is the largest of any plant. Far to the southwest lie the outer coral atolls, above all Aldabra — one of the world's largest raised atolls and among the least disturbed places on the planet, where roughly 100,000 giant tortoises roam free. Between granite peaks, coral reefs, and seabird colonies, the archipelago is a global conservation treasure.
