The lay of the land
Vanuatu is a chain of around eighty islands scattered down the South Pacific along the Ring of Fire, and volcanism defines it. Several volcanoes remain active, above all Mount Yasur on Tanna, which has erupted almost continuously for centuries and can be approached to the crater rim. Beyond the fire, the islands hold dense rainforest, waterfalls, extraordinarily clear freshwater blue holes, and coral reefs and wrecks that make for world-class diving. Rich volcanic soils support taro, yam, and coconut, and traditional kastom culture remains strong across the islands.

Vanuatu's cooking centres on root crops and the sea: lap lap (grated root vegetable baked in leaves with coconut milk) is the national dish, alongside fresh reef fish, coconut crab, taro, and yam.
