The lay of the land
Morocco spans a remarkable range in a short distance: snow-capped Atlas peaks, fertile valleys and palm-shaded oases, and, to the southeast, the edge of the Sahara — the largest hot desert on Earth. At Erg Chebbi, wind has piled sand into towering dunes that glow at dawn and dusk, fed by hidden fossil aquifers that surface as oases. Beyond the dunes lie some of the darkest, clearest night skies anywhere.

A taste of the place
Moroccan cuisine is famous worldwide: slow-cooked tagines of meat, fruit, and spice; couscous; bread baked in the sand; sweet mint tea; and the dates that sustain desert life. Amazigh (Berber) traditions run deep in the south.

- Explore the dunes with local Amazigh guides and stay overnight in a desert camp.
- Carry ample water and sun protection in the desert.
