Despite its harsh isolation, it is one of the richest wildlife islands on the planet: its beaches host king penguin colonies numbering in the hundreds of thousands, vast breeding gatherings of elephant and fur seals, and nesting wandering albatrosses, while glaciers tumble from serrated peaks straight to the sea. Once a whaling hub, it is now a protected haven, forever linked to Ernest Shackleton, who is buried at Grytviken.
