🇱🇰 Natural wonders of Sri Lanka

A compact island of astonishing variety — misty highland plateaus, primary rainforest, and a monolithic rock fortress — packed into a teardrop off the tip of India.

🗓️ Best time for nature: The island has two monsoons, so somewhere is usually dry: the west and south are best from December to March, the east from May to September.

The lay of the land

Sri Lanka squeezes an outsized range of nature into a small island. A central massif rises above 2,000 metres into cool grassland and cloud forest at Horton Plains, its rim dropping away at World's End. The wet southwest holds Sinharaja, the island's last great primary rainforest and a biodiversity hotspot. From the dry-zone plains rises Sigiriya, a sheer volcanic-rock monolith, while reefs, lagoons, and elephant-rich national parks ring the coast. Endemism is remarkably high across the island's plants and animals.

  3. Sinharaja Forest Reserve

The island's last major primary rainforest — a biodiversity hotspot.

A taste of the place

Sri Lankan cuisine is built on rice and curry — coconut, chilli, curry leaves, and Maldive fish — with island specialties like hoppers, kottu, and an abundance of tropical fruit and spice.

Traveling responsibly

  • Time your route to the monsoons — one coast is usually dry while the other is wet.
  • Start highland walks like World's End at dawn, before the cloud rolls in.
  • Hire local guides in reserves like Sinharaja; they are compulsory and invaluable.

Sri Lanka packs mountains, rainforest, and monolithic rock into a single small island. The central highlands rise to the misty plateau of Horton Plains and the cliff of World’s End; the wet southwest holds the primary rainforest of Sinharaja; and from the plains soars the rock fortress of Sigiriya. This atlas begins Sri Lanka’s chapter with those three, with its reefs, lagoons, and elephant country still to come.
